Crude oil prices settled lower despite a massive draw in U.S. crude supplies as domestic output continued to expand.
U.S. crude stockpiles fell 3.6 million barrels last week, the EIA said, exceeding expectations for a decline of 525,000 barrels.
The American Petroleum Institute said that U.S. oil inventories rose by 1 million barrels last week.
Japan's crude oil imports in April fell 8.8 percent from a year earlier to 15.36 million kilolitres (3.22 million barrels per day), the data showed.
